Professor Zihni Sinir

Professor Zihni Sinir : Cartoons to Reality Gadgets

Professor Zihni SinirProfessor Zihni Sinir (Nerved Mind in English?) is the creation of caricaturist (now also designer) Irfan Sayar which continues to be published since 1977. It is a showcase of very practical, curious and obviously humorous imaginary professor.

Irfan Sayar in latest years opened a workshop in Istanbul, Turkey where he gives both industrial and handmade life to some of his caricatures. I have tried to translate them with my poor English level. Anyway, I hope you enjoy them.

Ancient Gadgets Museum and Buying a Trebuchet

Smith College Museum of Ancient Inventions website is a good place to spend some time on the history of ancient objects to increase knowledge. Some of the items are really interesting like the Aztec Calendar Wheels as you see in the following photo.

If you have ever played Age of Empires (who did not), maybe trebuchets were also one of your favorites. Yeah, they are destructive and entertaining as well. Now, you can buy an exact scale copy of trebuchet which was used against Scotts during a siege of Stirling Castle in 1304. Edward Longshanks is the king behind the idea. Here is the Stirling Warwolf Trebuchet.

Crazy World of Sound Machines

Maybe, you had watched this beautiful and very realistic computer animation where the virtual graphics instruments made of pipes, strings and balls were playing digital music. It was very popular some years ago and even many people had believed that Incredible Music Machine was real. Watch this one first before the real action:

Now, such a machine became a reality by the efforts of Absolut Visionaries. The whole instrument system consists of rubber balls, wooden keys, tuned wine glasses, robotic fingers. The most interesting part of the story is that you can interact with the Absolut Quartet machine at absolutmachines.com website online. You can enter your theme for some seconds, and the clever sound machine will perform it like an musical ensemble. Yeah, another creative reason for us to drink that flamefull Vodka! :) Here is the video:

There are 2 more sound machines I have found unique. If you are further interested in, visit also Pe lang + zimoun machine and Festo sound machine.

Duchess Multiplayer Chess Battle Game

Duchess Multiplayer Chess Game

Another creative game for gadget lovers.

Duchess is a board game very similar to chess but it is played by many players in two teams. If you are an addict of chess and spending hours challenging with your friends in one-to-one fight, now it is time of teaming up for a more bloody taste.

The rules of the game similar to the classical chess, but extended. Hey, we have even wizards and duchesses now !

Actually there are hundreds of chess variants invented through history and still being developed but the most famous ones are
Fischer Random Chess and Capablanca Chess. They were both former Chess World champions and legendary chess players.

The World’s Biggest Pencil

World's Biggest Pencil

Ashrita Furman (He claims that he has other 72 Guinness records including “The world record for world records”) and his 50 friends built this pencil by spending $20,000 as a gift to their now-deceased meditation instructor. The thing that I don’t understand is how they could spend $20,000 for a big cut wood. Instead, they could buy a new Airboard for $14,500 and each could use it for a week in a year including the meditation instructor :) Anyway, here is the video of the pencil.

If you are still interested more on pencils, here is the World’s Largest Coloured Pencil at the Pencil Museum

Milky Way Galaxy 3D Model
This 3D cube is so special. 80,000 stars of the Milky Way was etched using a laser. The data is exact and provided from Japan’s National Astronomical Observatory after some debates between the Japanese government and manufacturer company because of the usage of observatory data. The galaxy is situated in the cube to the right because the Earth is the center in the cube. Interesting astronomy gadget for science fans.

Top Strangest & Coolest Musical Instruments Ever Invented

Tony Levin plays Chapman StickIf you appreciate how Tony Levin from legendary King Crimson plays Chapman stick masterfully, you would naturally like to know more about the strangest musical instruments.

I have prepared this selective instrument list after a thorough
search from tens of professionally used or amateur home inventor instruments.

Famous Theremin Photo

Theremin: As being the ancestor of all electronic musical instruments, I appreciate its uniqueness and mad Tesla style. The invention comes from Russia by Lev Thermen in 1919. It is played without touching using both hands.

Widely used in both classical and popular music. Here is Samuel Hoffman playing a popular dance melody ! with Theremin in 1953

Hammered DulcimerHammered Dulcimer: If you are a drummer and want to feel how guitar players do it with strings, that’s for you or vice versa; hammer your strings like a drummer.

This video tells us how beautiful this instrument suits for medieval folk genre.

A Benjamin Franklin InventionGlass Harmonica: Yeah, it is invented by Benjamin Franklin in 1761 when he saw how water filled wine-glasses are played. Grandmasters including Mozart, Bach, Strauss loved it much and arranged many compositions for it. In 18th century, it was believed by many that it would make both musicians and listeners go mad.

Actually, the only danger was the lead poisoning through
the rubbing old lead glasses with fingers.

Here is an excerpt video about Glass Harmonica
and Mr. Franklin.

Beware the nonsense musicMaywa Denki: Let’s continue with cacophony sound machines of Japanese bizarre machine artist Nobumichi Tosa. I can’t find words to define this. You should watch the following video instead.

Largest & Loudest Musical Instrument Atlantic City Convention Hall Organ: The largest and loudest musical instrument ever constructed including over 33,000 pipes at the weight of 150 tons!

Here is the video for the king of the instruments.

Lego InstrumentLEGO Harpsichord: If we don’t consider the strings, all harpsichord parts are made of plastic LEGO pieces by Henry Lim in two years of heavy working process.

The best part is that it is playable.

Here is how the harpsichord sounds at the inventor’s website.

Here are other useful websites totally specialized in odd instruments with lots of information.
