After reviewing tens of digital cameras at Amazon during this week, finally I decided to buy Canon PowerShot SX20IS.

My loyal blog readers know that how I am fanatically careful about spending money only on gadgets & electronics which has a good quality & price balance. That’s why I didn’t buy an iPad or Kindle DX yet, waiting for their next versions. We will see if they will suit to my needs or not in near future.

Anyway, I was reading much buzz about Canon PowerShot SX20IS on several tech shopping forums for weeks. I needed a digital camera to use especially for my new travel blog project which will include only HD quality videos & photos.

Well, why to spend much money, if I could get this Canon digital camera at Amazon for the half price.

It has everything which I would need. 720p stereo HD movice support. 12.1 megapixel resolution and 20x wide-angle optical zoom which is enough for shots for open nature photos. I should emphasize a very good feature of the camera. It has optical image stabilizer. It means that the I am able to shoot crips images even I shake the camera. I am not an expert on the very technical details of every digital camera features, but I know what to choose with experience and the power of comparison. For me, predefined settings are important. A good digital camera should determine what it is shooting. A sunset or a sea view in the morning is different and needs special arrangements. Hopefully, Canon PowerShot SX20IS has 22 pre-defined shooting settings to help me.

I will not talk about much technical details. You can just read the plenty of reviews from Google Search or trust Amazon customers. Overall, 82 people has given 5 stars so far, 49 people have voted for 4 stars. 14 people have given 3 stars, 5 people are for 2 stars and only 6 people have voted for 1 star. Add my 5 stars to this high quality Canon digital camera as well, dear Amazon

I had written about what are the silent mouse options in the market in one of previous posts. Thanko is one of the most known manufacturers of silent mouse and keyboards. Their silent mouse model was 5 times less sound producing. This time they have developed a better silent keyword version.  Actually, many new laptop and netbook models already have much silenced buttons but Thanko Keyword EX emits only 44.5 DB noise beating all of them.

Since DB is a logarithmic measure (Calculated using power of tens), small changes can effect the noise level highly. For example while a normal conversation provides around 60 dB, whisper does 20 dB. A mosquito buzz is 40 dB.  Decide yourself. I have found a useful page which explains decibel and properties of sound waves with samples if you are further interested.

What I am talking about is another brilliant device invented by Sir James Dyson, famous English Industrial Engineer. Exactly 104,000 rotations in a minute is amazing !

We are talking about a handheld vacuum cleaner equipped with world’s fastest motor. DC31 will surely make dusts and debris a history. Beware your large objects as well while using. The device will be sold in UK next month in two versions. Not much costly, around $250 on average. Would you buy the new Dyson dustbuster or a new version of iRobot robotic vacuums?

I was lately much thinking about some of the strange ways of technology development. In near future, even robots will begin to talk like people, but we can’t get rid of some very OLD habits. The sound of mouse is the most irritating one to me. Klik! Klik! Klik!… goes to eternity. This should be optional for people who want silence. If you are in a company working around you plenty of people using computers, it becomes a really nightmare. So, I at last decided a way to find my and my wife’s ear-saver legendary silent mouse because I also often write at nights at home. Yeah, a dedicated click monster I am.

I could find a handful useful resources. The first one is Quiet Mouse website. They have both USB and wireless mouse variations which they prefer to name as QuietSmooth. I guess, they just replaced the mouse switch inside with another non sounding material.

My second discovery can shock you a bit. It is a Silent Mouse Software. No need to click on the screen. With the help of the program, when you stay on a link  it will show you a tiny window where you move and pause your mouse just a second and it will do the click. There are all variations like click, double click, right click, scroll etc. Honestly I didn’t try the product. It is what they say on their website.

Another (hopefully) much silent mouse called as Thanko. It is advertised that click wheel and the mouse buttons have been silenced to one-fifth that of a normal mouse that I consider enough for normal day usage, but I wanted to have a real full silence! Do I want much? Gizmodo reviewed Thanko with the result of disappointment too.

Second is Buffalo USB Silent Mouse. This one also lowers the noise but doesn’t eliminate completely. Unit does not work with Vista (yet).. Hmmm let’s look further.

So, here is another powerful candidate! Apple Mighty Mouse Wireless Kit. Everything is superb. No clicking at all. Everything is touch-sensitive. Wireless, cool design. Positive reviews. But, as you can expect from Apple, it only works with Mac OS X. So, you will need a Bluetooth-enabled Macintosh computer. I continued my search further as a poor PC user.

I see that it is a big empty market still except the first one I mentioned. Some smart guys tell us how we can make silent mouse ourselves. My current champion is DIY Silent Mouse. I will try to do it in my first spare time.

I had a chance to use a very basic laser distance meter while trying to figure out the size of each room of my summer house to later use in a home design architect program. The technology for engineers and architects is much more ahead of what I needed surely.

Leica announced their latest laster distance meter model, Disto D8. The device perfectly measures distances from 0,05 meters to 200 meters. Accuracy is amazing ± 1.0 mm. The results can be immediately send into other vital applications like Excel, Word or AutoCad. It can even auto generate blueprint for AutoCad programs. Do you want to know the length of a building at a distance and how far away this building is? It is simple. Just point the laser to your target, arrange the angle position and the device will do the rest.

The problem with long distances was finding the laser point. Now, Leica has a solution with x4 optical zoom where you can aim the target using high resolution 2.4-Inch colour display. It is a perfect device but not cheap at all.

Amazon is working hard to develop new better versions of Kindle. While the storm of Kindle 2 didn’t become silent yet, Amazon made another surprise by introducing 9.7″ version of Kindle Wireless Reading Device and accepting pre-orders. The device named as Kindle DX will be released this summer and will be sold according to first come first served principle. According to Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, this big version will help reading newspapers, maps, graphs and magazines better. The text and images are much sharper and PDF format is now naturally supported without any need of conversions. You can see the size difference in the photos below.

They have added also an iPhone-like function. When you turn the device the display will follow it. Portrait to landscape or the opposite, and all the text and images will be resized accordingly automatically. It has advantage of viewing graphs in more detail and easy way.

All old features of Kindle are reserved including 3G, WiFi and text to speech technology. The storage size is now around 3500 books. Kindle 2 had around 1500 books capacity.

The only negative I can say that Kindle DX weighs almost double of Kindle. Exactly 535g. But, I think many people will neglect this and buy Kindle DX because of its high quality and features where other hi-tech companies can not even approach to compete against.

I was thinking that home PCs will never be such effective eventually after the release of tons of notebook and netbook models in latest 3 years.

Asus made me take my words back with EEE TOP touchscreen PC. It is a real slim designed multimedia enjoyment and easy communication device. I think the best place for this would be kitchen. I like the idea of eating and surfing freely in Internet just by touching and not fighting with mouse at all (built-in wireless high-speed connectivity)
