We all know about the magnetic field experiment which shows how some particles like graphite inside the pencil can be used to make visible magnetic lines. It is surely a boring stuff if you are over 10 years old.

However, I am sure that many people didn’t hear about ferrofluids which show amazing behaviors which are important both scientifically and visually. The image on the left better talks about the beauty of ferrofluids. Let’s understand what ferrofluid is without going scientific.

Ferrofluids are mixtures of organic solvents and ferromagnetic particles in essence. In normal conditions, if we mix Iron-oxide particles in oil (organic solvent) and bring near to a magnet bar, all iron-oxide particles would be running to magnet bar and piling there without any beauty.

But in the case of ferrofluids, the iron-oxide particles can not be pulled easily by magnets. There are other nanoscale elements called as surfactants which prevent this happening. You can think them as particles in the middle of oil and iron-oxide, thus behaving like a connecting force. So, when a magnet approaches to a special ferrofluid, it would not only affect magnetic particles but also oil attached on nanoscale grade to these particles, leaving us incredibly aesthetic geometrical ferrofluid shapes.

One of the most famous applications on art is ferrofluid sculptures. Here is the ferrofluid sculpture video of a Japanese artist, named as Morpho Towers.

What are Ferrofluids?

Ferrofluid Toys & Science Kits
There are a few nice ferrofluid kits at Amazon to experience this behavior at home. Suitable for children (who can understand that it is not for drinking) as an education material as well.

James Cameron’s Avatar has shaken the hi-tech film industry & (neo-shaman communities) with innovative 3D technology & anti-human humanistic storyline which is similar to District 9. While the storm of Avatar movie is calming, Mattel didn’t forget about the real Avatar fans.

Avatar Collectible FiguresThe Avatar collectible figures consist of the heroes & heroines of the movie (sexy Neytiri, fate-victim Jake), monsters, vehicles and surely, the war-obsessive Colonel Miles Quatrich. The figures have some extra features as well which are uniquely thought by Mattel & designers of Avatar merchandise. The Navi characters are glowing in the dark with accentuates on their illustrious blue. And using a special i-Tag, it is possible to reanimate the 3D battle scenes from the movie on your computer.

I should add that all these Mattel Avatar figures & sets are currently for adult collectors and not suitable for children playing. Most figures are without joints & material doesn’t seem to be very hard. You know, children can easily break them apart in seconds.

Anyway, let’s look at some of these very detailed avatars figures.

Avatar Neytiri FigureSexy Na’vi Neytiri figure is about 3 inch tall and bio-luminescence property.

In other words, Neytiri figure will glow in the dark. The famous Avatar character Neytiri also has a bow & arrow in the package.

Overall, a pretty attractive Avatar figurine. Some fans complaint that the scale was not observed very carefully by comparisons of human & navi people sizes.

Even this couldn’t stop that Neytiri became the bestseller in fantasy figures section of Amazon.

Avatar Na’vi Leonopteryx Figure:

Avatar Na'vi Leonopteryx Collectible FigureThe most savage creature of all Pandora fantasy world is much better detailed than other Avatar figures.

Notice the 20-inch wingspan, various points of joints, ability to carry other human or Navi figures.

This figure ships with a stand & iTag.

I would certainly put into a special list of display figures. Scaling matches to other Navi figures. It is also a favoring feature.

Thanator Avatar Collectibles FigureThanator figure is also very appealing. Especially skin textures, wrinkles & muscles are cast in very detail.

Like many other figures in Pandora world, you will need to put together several pieces like body, head, tail, legs etc.

It is easy for adults surely. I would also add this one to my Avatar collectible figures.

Avatar RDA Scorpion GunshipLet’s not forget about the nasty side of Avatar movie. For example, RDA Scorpion Gunship: 24 points of articulation is nice.

The vehicle figure includes double firing missiles, fourfold gyrating blades, and revolving barrel.

After reviewing tens of digital cameras at Amazon during this week, finally I decided to buy Canon PowerShot SX20IS.

My loyal blog readers know that how I am fanatically careful about spending money only on gadgets & electronics which has a good quality & price balance. That’s why I didn’t buy an iPad or Kindle DX yet, waiting for their next versions. We will see if they will suit to my needs or not in near future.

Anyway, I was reading much buzz about Canon PowerShot SX20IS on several tech shopping forums for weeks. I needed a digital camera to use especially for my new travel blog project which will include only HD quality videos & photos.

Well, why to spend much money, if I could get this Canon digital camera at Amazon for the half price.

It has everything which I would need. 720p stereo HD movice support. 12.1 megapixel resolution and 20x wide-angle optical zoom which is enough for shots for open nature photos. I should emphasize a very good feature of the camera. It has optical image stabilizer. It means that the I am able to shoot crips images even I shake the camera. I am not an expert on the very technical details of every digital camera features, but I know what to choose with experience and the power of comparison. For me, predefined settings are important. A good digital camera should determine what it is shooting. A sunset or a sea view in the morning is different and needs special arrangements. Hopefully, Canon PowerShot SX20IS has 22 pre-defined shooting settings to help me.

I will not talk about much technical details. You can just read the plenty of reviews from Google Search or trust Amazon customers. Overall, 82 people has given 5 stars so far, 49 people have voted for 4 stars. 14 people have given 3 stars, 5 people are for 2 stars and only 6 people have voted for 1 star. Add my 5 stars to this high quality Canon digital camera as well, dear Amazon :)

Best Mobile Broadband DealsIn recent times, we’ve come to expect more from our internet connections. Once upon a time a dial-up modem bringing you the wealth of the world’s knowledge at 56kbits per second was considered an amazing feat. Now we’ve grown accustomed to fast broadband connections which even allow us to stream TV and video. Additionally, growing numbers of us are finding that just being online when we’re at home or at work is not enough – we want to have all the internet can offer at our fingertips even when we’re on the move. And that’s where mobile broadband comes in.

What is mobile broadband?

mobile broadband uses either an on-board modem or an external USB modem (or ‘dongle’) to connect your laptop to the internet via the mobile phone networks. This means that unlike Wi-Fi services, it doesn’t involve you looking for a hotspot in a café or a hotel; and unlike smart-phone 3G internet services, you have the screen size, the keyboard and the processing power of your laptop to work with. Mobile broadband means that you can get online where-ever you are, providing you can get a mobile phone signal. All the latest laptops and notebooks are compatible with mobile broadband, so you do not need to spend time searching for wi-fi spots.

Who uses it?

Mobile broadband has proved extremely useful for anyone who works on the move – in particular business travellers wanting to make the most of that train journey or airport wait. It also suits anyone who likes to stay connected whilst out and about; and works really well for people who don’t want to get involved with landlines, cables and modems and such – so for example students who change accommodation frequently and don’t necessarily have a landline connection.

Sounds great. What’s the catch?

Mobile broadband is still quite a young technology, and while advances are expected soon, at present connection speeds fall noticeably short of what you’re used to on your home broadband connection. To give you an idea, home broadband connection speeds are advertised as anything up to 50Mb, whereas the top advertised mobile broadband speed is 7.2Mb. Advertised speeds can be extremely misleading, but the fact remains that you will notice your mobile broadband connection being slower than your home connection.

How much does it cost?

As with broadband packages, mobile broadband tariffs vary a great deal. There are six main mobile broadband suppliers in the UK, and not by coincidence they are the big mobile phone network providers: 3, O2, Orange, T-Mobile, Vodafone and Virgin. All of these providers offer a wide range of options, ranging from starter services at around £5 per month up to tariffs which include a subsidised laptop and a large data allowance for around £40 per month. It’s important to spend some time trying to find the best mobile broadband deals for you.

The key to finding the right tariff for you is firstly to know your options, and secondly, to use an independent online comparison service such as Mobile Broadband Genie, which brings all of the provider tariff information together in one place.

Mobile broadband contracts differ across a number of key aspects, so there are a few things to consider when shopping around.

Speed. As we’ve already mentioned, mobile broadband is slower than fixed line broadband in most cases – but as we’ve also mentioned, advertised speeds can be misleading. The magic words ‘up to’ allow suppliers to quote the theoretical top speed of their network, which is not necessarily the speed you can expect to see. Speed will vary according to which supplier you go for, how busy the network is, and how far you are from the nearest tower. However, most suppliers will now give you an estimated speed for your connection to their network.

Coverage. As with speed, coverage will vary according to provider, the congestion of the network, and your geographical location – so check first with a coverage checker, which are provided on many comparison websites.

Length of contract. Contracts are usually 12, 18 or 24 months. There are also pay-as-you-go options available for anyone not keen to sign a contract.

Download limit. Because data is more expensive to transfer via the mobile networks, mobile broadband tariffs will usually have a restriction on the amount of data you can transfer per month. Download limits start at 1GB which is relatively low and go up to 10 or 15GB per month. There can be penalties for over-use, though, so if you choose a low data cap make sure you know what you’re entitled to and read the small print.

I think this could be an interesting valentine’s day present for geeks and gadget lovers. Or totally forget about valentine’s day. Turn your room a living organism according to your mood.

Philips Living Colors LED lamp is capable of producing 16 million color variants, surely according to your choice. It uses a simple color science approach. 256 colors x 256 saturation choices x 256 dimmer variants = 16 million colors. Besides, it is possible to arrange light density with the included remote control. The lamp consists of 4 separate LEDs (no heat emitting 2 reds, 1 blue and 1 green) to achieve the final effect. It think Philips Living Colors LED lamp works best when you use the color rotation function to change the mood automatically with pre-arranged intensity and saturation levels. I liked the idea of controling multiple LivingColor lamps with the same control.

Anyway, decide yourself. Currently selling at Amazon at very best rates.

Cuboro is a 3D wooden building and marble track system which is as creative and famous as Lego and Kapla toys.

There are individual wooden blocks which have holes and carved channels. The idea is to build a structure where the marbles will pass through the tunnels and holes by falling several levels with only help of the gravity.

After a simple start, children can challenge building more complicated structures. There are several sets varying on number of pieces, functionality and difficulty settings.

There is a youtube video below showing how a completed Cuboro structure works.

The wooden toy blocks are ecologically safe and suggested by experts for creativity stimulation of kids 3 years older. A high quality wooden Swiss made toy.

I will introduce one concept and two real products for bookworms who like to read at night but having difficulties disturbing near person with the light source.

The MARK bookmark is just an excellent concept thought by Avnish Priya Gautnam. During the day, it’s like any other bookmark but at night, glows to illuminate your pages via FOLED (Flexible Organic Light Emitting Diode) technology. The intensity of light can be controlled according to the reader’s requirements. It has won 2007 Design concept award at Red Dot. Not manufactured yet.

The other ones are LightWedge Paperback and LightWedge Mini. Actual very useful real devices for bookworms.

A lighted, distortion-free acrylic lens extends across the book page and emits all the brightness directly onto the book page, reducing shadows and glare. Since the light is emitted directly onto the page, there’s no excess reflection to disturb others nearby.

The LightWedge Paperback is thin and lightweight and easily slips into a backpack, tote bag, or briefcase. Also, when not in use, it is useful as a convenient bookmark stored between a book’s pages. The bright LEDs that illuminate the LightWedge Paperback have two brightness levels and a lifetime warranty. The light can run for 40 hours on four AAA batteries.

The same great LightWedge but now in a smaller and more convenient size. The LightWedge Mini is a perfect light for reading maps, menus, manuals and other materials in the dark.

Previously, I have introduced you Bathsheba Grossman and her charming geotmetric metal objects which are a perfect combination of symmetrical art and mathematics.

Today, I have discovered another great master who is very active in this field. Prof. George Hart at New York States University has a lifetime hobby of constructing geometric sculptures and assembly puzzles from any material you can imagine; plastic, wood, paper, metal etc. He is also a very active education volunteer arranging workshops worldwide to give young people curiosity about geometry and construction.

Here are some of his works and photos from workshops with students.

I remember how I had passed my geometric origami lesson in university by just creating the shape you see below by paper years ago.

I am a bit surprised that now this object is everywhere including Youtube. In 1999, all we had a bunch of amateur geocities pages for such things. Anyway, this is called as five intersecting tetrahedra and can be done using origami techniques in a few hours without using any glues. The beauty of this just impressed my professor that he gladly gave me a pass mark even though I missed most of his lessons preferring laying under trees :)

Mathematics can be easily used as a language of beauty and charm. Bathseba Grossman uses her mathematics knowledge excellently by creating 3D sculptures which have geometrical and topological meaning using CAD systems and bronze. Maybe, you have already seen some Mobius strip or Klein bottle inspired objects which have simple dimension tricks. But, I am sure most people didn’t see or hear about the following structures. Here are a few of them :

Borromean Rings :

The connections between edges and surfaces are naturally appealing to us since it looks so organic and soft.

The Gyroid :

Another innovating object which uses the principles of minimal surfaces and repeat themselves in 3D.

Ora :

A complicated looking but actually simple double-tetrahedron. It is also playing with our symmetry obsession.

You can see lots of other sculptures at Bathseba Grossman website and read the mathematical explanations if you are further interested in the subject.

This unique map created by Shulze & Webb (A London based creative design studio) is not something regular we are used to see every day. All Manhattan in a bent 3D (without a horizon) is just under your investigation. A realistic bent in the map makes this design as a real GPS product idea. Just imagine to have this in your Garmin device. It would be much intuitive and easier to locate the target building. By the way, S&W sells 1000 limited edition of the map as a big poster at their own website in two bending variations.
